Project Overview

Lima, the capital city of Peru with a population of over 10 million, faces unique water challenges as one of the driest major cities in the world, located in a coastal desert receiving less than 15mm of rainfall annually. The city’s principal wastewater treatment facility, serving approximately 4 million residents, was operating with deteriorating collection and process piping that had exceeded its design life by more than a decade.

The treatment plant authority launched a comprehensive infrastructure rehabilitation program to replace corroded concrete and metal pipes with modern corrosion-resistant materials. The project aimed to extend the plant’s service life by 25+ years while improving treatment capacity and complying with updated environmental discharge standards.

Challenge

The piping system at the treatment plant was exposed to one of the most aggressive environments in municipal infrastructure: hydrogen sulfide gas generated by sewage decomposition was attacking concrete and metal pipes through microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The collection network also had to handle abrasive solids, variable flow rates, and occasional high-pressure cleaning operations.

The replacement work had to be carried out within the operational plant without disrupting treatment processes. Access was restricted in many areas due to the dense layout of existing tanks, structures, and underground utilities. The pipe material also needed to withstand the coastal desert environment with high UV exposure and temperature variations.

Solution

WorldLink supplied a dual-material solution: UPVC pipes (ISO 1452) were used for gravity-flow collection sections where their high stiffness and UV resistance provided optimal performance, while HDPE pipes (PE100, PN 10-16) were installed for pressurized process lines within the treatment plant, offering excellent flexibility and joint integrity.

The UPVC pipes were specified with rubber ring socket joints for the gravity mains, providing leak-free performance while accommodating ground movement. For the HDPE sections, butt fusion welding was used for main runs and electrofusion fittings for branch connections and repairs. All materials were selected for their proven resistance to hydrogen sulfide corrosion and long-term durability in wastewater environments.
