River Sand Dredging Operation

DN 500mm orange flanged HDPE dredging pipes with floaters along the Irrawaddy River, Myanmar

Project Overview

The Irrawaddy River in Myanmar is a major source of high-quality sand and aggregates used in construction across Southeast Asia. A large-scale sand mining operation needed an efficient and reliable floating pipeline system to transport sand slurry from dredging vessels operating mid-river to the processing and loading facility on the riverbank, a distance of approximately 1,200 meters.

The mining operation runs year-round, and any downtime in the slurry transport system directly impacts production targets and revenue. The previous steel pipe system had suffered from rapid wear due to the abrasive nature of sand slurry, frequent joint failures, and difficulty in reconfiguring the floating line as the dredging location shifted along the river.

WorldLink was approached to provide a complete floating HDPE pipeline solution designed for the demanding conditions of large-scale river dredging operations.

Dredging Operation

Challenge

The floating pipeline had to withstand strong river currents, monsoon-driven wave action, and continuous flexing as the river level fluctuated between dry and wet seasons by up to 8 meters. The highly abrasive sand slurry traveling through the pipeline at high velocity would quickly wear down conventional materials.

The pipeline also needed to be easily reconfigurable, as the dredging location moved every few weeks along the riverbed. Quick deployment and retrieval of the floating line were essential to minimize downtime during repositioning. The system also had to resist UV degradation from intense tropical sunlight and damage from river debris.

Solution

WorldLink supplied DN 500mm orange high-visibility HDPE pipes with integrally molded flanged ends, paired with HDPE floaters at calculated intervals to maintain optimal buoyancy and stability. The flanged connection system allowed rapid assembly and disassembly, enabling the floating line to be reconfigured within hours rather than days.

The PE100 grade material was selected for its excellent abrasion resistance, with a wall thickness engineered to provide extended service life under sand slurry transport conditions. The bright orange color was chosen for high visibility during both day and night operations, enhancing navigational safety for river traffic.
