River Sand Dredging: 500m Floating HDPE Pipeline in Vietnam

January 22, 2026 • Project Case

HDPE dredging pipe

Project Overview

A Vietnamese sand mining company needed a reliable floating pipeline system for extracting river sand from the Mekong Delta. The operation required a pipeline that could float on water, withstand constant movement from waves and currents, and resist abrasion from sand slurry being transported at high velocity.

WorldLink supplied a complete DN 500mm floating HDPE pipeline system with integrated floaters, covering a 500-meter distance from the dredger to the shore processing facility.

Key Result: 500m floating pipeline capable of handling 200 tons of sand per hour, with 5+ year service life and minimal maintenance.

System Components

  • DN 500mm HDPE pipes: PE100 grade, SDR 21, orange color for high visibility
  • HDPE Floaters: 30 units at 6-meter intervals, providing buoyancy and stability
  • Flanged connections: Quick-release flanged joints for easy assembly and repositioning
  • Wear-resistant lining: Enhanced abrasion resistance for sand slurry transport
  • Anchoring system: Adjustable anchor points for position stability in changing currents

Why Floating HDPE?

HDPE was chosen over steel pipe for several compelling reasons: the natural buoyancy of HDPE (density 0.95 g/cm³) eliminates the need for additional flotation devices on individual pipe sections; excellent abrasion resistance ensures long service life with sand slurry; flexibility allows the pipeline to conform to wave patterns without stress failure; and the lightweight nature of HDPE enables rapid deployment and retrieval as the dredging operation moves along the river.
