Municipal Water Supply: DN 315mm HDPE Pipeline Upgrade in Kenya
Project Overview
Nairobi’s rapidly expanding suburban areas required a major upgrade to the municipal water distribution network. The existing 30-year-old steel and concrete pipes were suffering from corrosion, frequent leaks, and insufficient pressure to serve the growing population.
WorldLink was selected to supply DN 110–315mm HDPE pipes and fittings for a 45km network expansion project serving over 200,000 residents in the eastern suburbs.
Key Result: Water loss reduced from 35% to under 5%, serving 200,000+ residents with reliable 24/7 water supply.
Technical Specifications
- Mainline: DN 315mm SDR 17.6 PE100 HDPE pipe — 18km
- Distribution lines: DN 110–200mm HDPE pipes — 27km
- Fittings: Butt fusion elbows, tees, reducers and flange adaptors
- Pressure rating: PN 10, designed for 24/7 continuous operation
Why HDPE?
The municipality chose HDPE over traditional materials for several key advantages: corrosion resistance eliminating the need for internal linings, leak-free butt fusion joints reducing water loss, flexibility allowing the pipe to withstand ground movement, and a 50+ year design life minimizing long-term replacement costs.
